Top 11 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Pool Builder

If you are planning a pool installation it can be an exciting time, but you’ll need to be careful to find the right contractor with the proper experience necessary for the job. When searching for The Woodlands pool builders, you’ll want to meet with them and ask them several questions before you hire them, including the following:

Question #1 – What’s your experience level?

Experience is unquestionably the most important thing to look for when hiring a pool builder.

You’ll always want to choose a company with extensive experience in pool building to ensure that your pool looks and functions the way that you want the first time around. As you might know, your backyard swimming pool can very well increase your home value so you only want to deal with professionals.

Be sure to ask your builder how many years of experience they have with pool building.

Question #2 – Can you show me past examples of your work?

Once you’ve found a potential contractor, you’ll want to see several examples of their prior work. During your first in person consultation they should bring several photos for you to review so that you can get some ideas on how your future pool might look.

It will also give you a good idea about what your potential contractor is capable of creating.

Question #3 – Are you licensed and insured?

Never work with a pool builder in The Woodlands or any other area without full licensing and insurance.

You can be liable for any number of potential accidents that could occur during your pool installation if you hire a contractor without a license or insurance.

Any professional pool building company will always have both, and you should be able to ask this question upfront and get proof without any issues.

Question #4 – How quickly can you build my pool?

No matter what your preferred turnaround time is, it’s a good idea to try to find out how long you can expect to wait for your pool to be finished.

Any good contractor will be able to provide you with an accurate turnaround time, and it will vary of course depending on the complexity of your installation.

Question #5 – Can you give me any former client references?

Speaking with former customers is one of the best ways to get a good idea about how your project will continue.

If you’re interested in speaking with them, be sure to ask your contractor for a few phone numbers of customers who would be happy to speak with you.

Ask about their experience and how pleased they were with the final result.

Question #6 – Can I see any pools in person?

Although photos can be helpful, being able to see the pool in person is even better.

If there are any former customers that would allow you to see their pools, ask them, or ask your landscaping company if they have any pools that you could view in person.

Seeing one will give you an excellent idea about what your potential company can accomplish and the true quality of their construction.

Question #7 – Do you offer a warranty of any kind?

You’ll want a warranty with your pool installation that will protect you from any mistakes made by your contractor. Although most professional companies typically won’t have many mistakes, there’s always the chance that something could go wrong or that a specification could be missed. In that circumstance, your pool company should fix the issue and give you a guarantee that they would do that beforehand.

Question #8 – Do you offer pool maintenance?

Pool maintenance will be necessary after it has been installed, and that it involves regular cleaning, chemical balancing, opening and closing the pool each season and other steps.

If your installation company offers this service it’s an added benefit, and you may be able to save a little money by purchasing a long term maintenance plan through them.

Question #9 – What payment options do you offer?

Find out what your pool builder’s payment options are before you start. Do they offer any type of financing or flexible payment options? Financing can allow you to start your project in the near future rather than waiting to save for a lump sum.

Some of the best and most professional pool builders will offer financing programs so that you can get a high quality and well-built pool with a manageable monthly payment.

Question #10 – What other features can I add?

Your backyard swimming pool can be much more than what you imagine. There are other features that enhance your overall landscape design like a slide, waterfall, outdoor kitchen, a pergola, custom outdoor lighting, and much more.

Ask your pool builder about other features they can add to enhance your custom swimming pool.

Question #11 – What is my expected cost?

This is one of the last questions to ask once you’ve determined that you have found the right company with the proper qualifications to start on your installation.

During your consultation, you should get an accurate quote for your pool, based on the specific features that you want.

They should let you know if there is the potential for your quote to increase after the project is completed due to unexpected delays or other costs, or if it is guaranteed to always be the same.

I really like question eight because it deals with what happens after the pool has been completed. After all, just because you paid someone to build the pool doesn’t mean you’ll know how to fix it if something goes wrong. Even if the contractor that builds the pool doesn’t offer maintenance, then you should ask if they know a good company that does.

That section focused on expected cost for pool installation was helpful. It’s good to know that it’s best to get a quote based on specific features you want. Overall, that advice seems like it helps me get a more accurate idea of what I can expect financially.

I like how you suggested asking them to show you past examples of their work. I agree that it will give a good idea of what they’re capable of creating. And, in my opinion, it may also give us some ideas that we didn’t realize we also wanted for our pool. My fiance and I will certainly keep these questions in mind for when we hire our potential pool contractor for our future home.

Thanks for sharing your article about hiring a pool builder. Your statement about how you gauge the capability of the pool contractor by checking their works caught my attention. I’m looking to install a swimming pool in our newly built house, but I’m not sure on how I want it to exactly look. For me, the portfolio of the pool contractor will give me an idea about the extent of their capabilities in creating different pool designs. I’ll go ahead and contact some pool contractors soon and remind them to bring some photos of their previous works to help me decide.
